Nana

Nana

Biography

Nana, born Nana Kwame Abrokwa on 5 October 1968 in Accra (Ghana), uses “Nana” as a Ghanaian title of nobility rather than a given name. He moved to Hamburg at the age of 10.

In the early 1990s he began his career as a DJ in hip‑hop clubs and also contributed as MC Africa True to tracks by DJ David Fascher, such as Here We Go and Make the Crowd Go Wild.

At the end of 1996 he released his first solo single, Darkman, which enjoyed success across Europe. His definitive breakthrough came in 1997 with the single Lonely, which stayed at the top of the German charts for more than a month. Other singles followed, including Let It Rain, He's Comin' and Too Much Heaven.

All these tracks appear on his debut album, “Nana – The Album”, which also features songs like One Second, Why? and 1,2,3 Are U Ready?, with collaborations from artists such as Jan van der Toorn, Jonestown, Pappa Bear, Alexandra Prince and other members of the Booya Family.

In 2008 Nana announced a double album, “12.Y.O”, celebrating the 12 years since “Darkman”; the record offers new versions of his earlier hits and unreleased material, and includes collaborations with Braheem, O.O.D, Sibela, Manuellsen and the Romanian musicians Korekt and Lavinia. Songs on the album include No Sun, Where You Belong, Any 1 Out There and the lead single, My Get Away.
