Kim Petras

Biography

Kim Petras is a German singer-songwriter, born on August 27, 1992 in Cologne.

She began recording music as a teenager and released her first EP One Piece of Tape in 2011. Her career turned in 2017 with the independent release of the single I Don't Want It at All, which reached the top of several Spotify viral charts; it was followed by a series of digital singles including Heart to Break and 1, 2, 3 Dayz Up (with Sophie Ellis-Bextor), later grouped informally as Era 1.

Her first official project, the album Clarity, was released on June 28, 2019 after a nine-week promotional campaign with a weekly single; later that year she also released the Halloween-themed album Turn Off the Light.

In 2020 she found international chart success with the songs Malibu and Broken Glass (a collaboration with Kygo). After signing with Republic Records in 2021, she released the singles Future Starts Now and Coconuts, the latter going viral on TikTok.

In 2022 she released the EP Slut Pop, then the collaboration Unholy (feat. Kim Petras) with British singer Sam Smith, a single that reached number one in more than fifteen countries including the UK, the US and Australia. This marked the first time an openly trans artist topped the charts in many of those countries. Kim Petras and Sam Smith also became the first openly trans and non-binary artists to win a Grammy, receiving the trophy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Her first studio album, Feed The Beast, was released on June 23, 2023, and includes the collaboration Alone with Nicki Minaj. Later that year she also surprise-released her previously cancelled album Problématique. Feed The Beast ranked among the most streamed albums of the year, accumulating over one billion streams.
