Studio Killers
Biography
Studio Killers is a British–Finnish–Danish virtual electropop group made up of four animated characters: singer and designer Chubby Cherry (or simply Cherry), keyboardist Goldie Foxx, DJ Dyna Mink, and manager Bipolar Bear. Cherry is credited as the group’s lead artist, but the characters were designed and animated by Finnish visual designer and animator Eliza Jäppinen.
The group debuted in 2011 with the single Ode to the Bouncer, which tells of Cherry’s difficulty getting into a nightclub, and gained popularity through its YouTube video; the track charted in the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark. After other singles released between 2012 and 2013—Eros and Apollo, All Men Are Pigs and Jenny—the group released its self-titled debut album in 2013, followed by the single Grande Finale in 2014.
The voices behind Goldie Foxx and Dyna Mink said they initially wrote a song for a British girl group dropped by its label, then were put in contact with Cherry’s singer, who wrote the lyrics and performed the track with them. Members say most of their communication is by email, although the song Who Is in Your Heart Now? was written at their first face-to-face meeting. The members’ real identities remain unknown; fans have speculated that Finnish musician Teemu Brunila is the voice of Cherry.
In 2014 the group announced plans to perform live, starting with the Ruisrock festival in Finland, followed by Ilosaarirock. To prepare those shows and a world tour they launched a Kickstarter campaign that exceeded its goal. At those festivals the real counterparts of Goldie Foxx and Dyna Mink appeared on stage masked, while Cherry appeared as a video projection.
In 2020 the 2013 single Jenny experienced a resurgence on TikTok, prompting the group to release a lyric video in January 2021, followed by a remix by Danish DJ and producer Faustix in February, and a new version featuring German singer Kim Petras in March 2021.
In June 2021 the group collaborated with electronic duo The Knocks on the single Bedroom Eyes, later remixed by Nathan Barnatt under the pseudonym Dad Feels. An animated pilot, Studio Killers 404, was released on YouTube in December 2021. The group returned with the single Underneath my Raincoat (shortened to Raincoat) on 24 March 2023.
