Biography
Sam Smith, full name Samuel Frederick Smith, is an English singer and songwriter born on 19 May 1992.
Their career took off in October 2012 thanks to their appearance on the track Latch, which propelled the group Disclosure and reached number eleven on UK sales. They were then featured on the single La La La by Naughty Boy, which reached number one on the British charts in May 2013.
At the end of 2013, Sam Smith was nominated for and won both the Brit Critics’ Choice Award 2014 and the BBC Sound of 2014 poll. Their debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, was released in May 2014. Among their singles, [song]Money on My Mind[/song] became their second UK number one, while [song]Stay with Me[/song] achieved international success, topping the UK chart and reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. The songs [song]I’m Not the Only One[/song] and [song]Like I Can[/song] also reached the UK top ten.
At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, In the Lonely Hour won four awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist, while [song]Stay with Me[/song] won Record and Song of the Year. Sam Smith was also nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
In 2015, the song [song]Writing’s on the Wall[/song], co‑written with Jimmy Napes for the film James Bond 007 Spectre, earned them a Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Their second album, The Thrill of It All (November 2017), debuted at number one in the UK and the United States. The lead single, [song]Too Good at Goodbyes[/song], reached number one in the UK and Australia. They later collaborated with Calvin Harris on the track [song]Promises[/song], which also peaked at number one in the UK.
In 2019, the duet with Normani on [song]Dancing with a Stranger[/song] reached the top ten in both the UK and the US and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2020 Brit Awards. A series of hit singles followed, including [song]How Do You Sleep?[/song], [song]To Die For[/song] and [song]I’m Ready[/song] with Demi Lovato, all included on their third album, Love Goes.
Over the course of their career, Sam Smith has won four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, one American Music Award, as well as a Golden Globe and an Oscar.
Sam Smith has been openly gay since 2014, has identified as genderqueer since 2017 and has used the pronouns they/them since 2019.
Note that the name Sam Smith is also used by an Australian artist who released the album Further, and by a British engineer, producer and guitarist of the same name who worked at Good Earth Studios between 1983 and 1990.
