Technotronic
Biography
Technotronic is a Belgian studio house project formed in 1988 by Jo Bogaert (also known by the pseudonym Thomas De Quincey).
The producer, already active in eurobeat with dance concepts such as Nux Nemo and Acts Of Madmen, first released in 1989 the track that would become Pump Up The Jam under the alias The Pro 24's. Inspired by the sound of Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, the song originally contained samples of Eddie Murphy, which were later replaced by new vocals.
The project’s first public image was the model Felly, used on covers and in the video; the actual vocals on Pump Up The Jam were performed by Manuela Kamosi, aka Ya Kid K, who was seen and heard for the first time on the second single, Get Up.
The debut album, This Beat Is Technotronic, also featured vocals by Eric Martin (alias MC Eric). By late 1990, Pump Up The Jam had reached number one on the dance “Billboard 12” chart.
A short collaboration with Colin Case (alias Einstein Doctor Deejay) and Melissa on the single Turn It Up in 1990 preceded the second album, Body To Body, released only in Europe in 1991 and featuring vocalist Réjane Magloire (alias Reggie).
Their last significant chart hit was Move This in 1992, used in a Revlon advertising campaign, which peaked at number 5 on the US Billboard chart.
The third album, Recall, released four years later in the then-current eurodance vein, marked the return of Ya Kid K on vocals, alongside Daisy Rollocks (alias Daisy Dee) and C. Davis (alias Black Diamond).
From 1999 until a recent period, Technotronic recorded with Monday Osaigbovo Agbonze (alias Monday Midnite) and Ya Kid K. Many remixes of their earlier tracks still fill dancefloors.
The project has sold more than 14 million albums.
