Owl City
Biography
Owl City is an American electronic music project created in 2007 in Owatonna, Minnesota. It is one of several projects by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young, who started this project by experimenting with music in his parents’ basement.
Owl City built an audience on the social networking site MySpace, like many musicians who found success in the late 2000s, before signing with Universal Republic Records, which became Republic Records, in 2008.
Adam Young also releases music under the names Sky Sailing, Port Blue, Color Therapy, Insect Airport, Seagull Orchestra, and under his own name, Adam Young.
He was a member of Windsor Airlift and Swimming with Dolphins, but is no longer involved with these bands.
Young has released seven albums under the name Owl City: Maybe I’m Dreaming (2008), Ocean Eyes (2009), All Things Bright and Beautiful (2011), The Midsummer Station (2012), Mobile Orchestra (2015), Cinematic (2018), and Coco Moon (2023).
His 2009 single, Fireflies, reached number one in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and the Netherlands. His second major hit, Good Time featuring Carly Rae Jepsen in 2012, reached number eight in the US and number one in New Zealand.
Adam Young cites Johnathon Ford of Unwed Sailor and Thomas Newman as his biggest influences. As a Christian, he also integrates his faith into some of his music, an aspect particularly evident on the album All Things Bright and Beautiful, especially in the song Galaxies.
