Heather Nova
Biography
Heather Nova, born Heather Allison Frith, is a singer-songwriter and poet born in Bermuda on July 6, 1967.
She grew up on a sailboat in the Caribbean. Her music career began in 1990 with an EP released under the name Heather Frith. Soon after, she adopted the stage name Nova, her Canadian mother’s maiden name, for easier pronunciation, particularly after several concerts in the Netherlands.
Her first studio album, ‘Glow Stars’, was released in 1993, followed the same year by a first live album, ‘Blow’. The 1994 album ‘Oyster’ is often considered one of her most accomplished works. She then released ‘Siren’ in 1998.
Throughout her career, she has collaborated with various artists. She notably co-wrote the song Renegade with ATB and recorded the track Someone New with the Swedish band Eskobar. She also performed a version of Billie Holiday’s ‘Gloomy Sunday’ for the German film ‘Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod’.
She has performed at major tours and festivals, having opened concerts for Van Morrison and Neil Young, and performed twice at the Lilith Fair festival alongside artists like Sarah McLachlan. She is also a regular at European festivals like Roskilde.
In 2001, she released the album ‘South’, with tracks featured on the soundtrack of the film ‘Serendipity’. Her album ‘Storm’, released in 2003, was recorded with the band Mercury Rev as backing musicians and reached the Top 5 in Germany. This album marked her first release on her own label, Saltwater Records.
Beyond music, Heather Nova published a book of poetry and drawings titled ‘the sorrowjoy’ in 2002. An album of the same name, where she reads her poems over ambient music, was released in 2006.
Her brother, Mishka, is also a reggae musician. She was married to producer Felix Tod.
