Sarah McLachlan

Biography

Sarah McLachlan, whose full name is Sarah Ann McLachlan, is a Canadian musician, singer and songwriter born January 28, 1968 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Her career began with the release of her debut album Touch in 1988, a critical and commercial success that included the track Vox. At that time she worked with Tom Ferris and Dean Russel of the band Moev, who discovered her: she sang backing vocals on their album Head Down in 1990 and joined her first nationwide tour as the opening act for The Grapes Of Wrath.

Her second album, Solace (1991), marked a breakthrough in Canada with the hits The Path of Thorns (Terms) and Into the Fire, certified double platinum; Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1994) followed as her international breakthrough, remaining on the charts for an extended period.

With Surfacing in 1997 she reached worldwide success — the album sold more than 11 million copies — earning her two Grammy Awards and four Juno Awards. Building on that fame, she launched the popular Lilith Fair tour, showcasing female artists and helping to launch several careers.

After taking several years off to start a family with her husband and drummer Ashwin Sood, she returned in 2003 with Afterglow, her first album of new songs in six years, featuring the singles Fallen, Stupid and World On Fire. She later released the Christmas album Wintersong in 2006, including an original title track, and Laws of Illusion in 2010, her first studio album of original material in seven years, with the singles Loving You Is Easy and Forgiveness.

Among her most popular songs are also Angel, Building a Mystery, Adia, Possession and I Will Remember You, known for their characteristic emotional sound.
