Bob Sinclar
Biography
Bob Sinclar (real name Christophe Le Friant) is a French producer, DJ, and remixer, born on 10 May 1969 in Paris. He is the co-founder of the Yellow Productions label, together with DJ Yellow.
He began his DJ career in 1986 at the age of 18 under the pseudonym Chris The French Kiss, initially specializing in funk and hip-hop. His first club hit was Gym & Tonic, a track produced by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk that used unauthorized samples from a Jane Fonda fitness cassette, leading to legal controversy. He later adopted the stage name Bob Sinclar, inspired by a character from Philippe de Broca’s film “Le Magnifique”.
A key figure of the “French touch” movement—a strain of house music marked by heavy sampling and filtered disco strings—he confirmed his success with his second album “Champs Élysées”. It includes Feel For You, a tribute to French musician Cerrone, which reached No. 9 on the UK Top 40. On Darlin', he collaborated with singer James “D-Train” Williams.
Bob Sinclar also explored other musical directions under various pseudonyms. As The Mighty Bop, he ventured into hip-hop and acid jazz. He also initiated the Africanism project, a collective producing house music blending Latin, jazz, African, and tribal influences, with a more deep-house orientation.
He achieved major international success in 2005 with the single Love Generation, which topped the charts in Australia and Germany in 2006 and reached No. 2 on the Dutch Top 40. He followed with the hits World, Hold On (featuring Steve Edwards) and Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now). E-Smoove’s remix of “World, Hold On” was nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2007, and the original track was voted No. 1 in Billboard magazine’s Hot Dance Club Play year-end ranking for 2006.
His album “Western Dream” (2006) helped establish his popularity in the commercial arena. He then released the albums “Soundz of Freedom” (2007) and “Born In 69” (2009); the latter’s first single was LaLa Song, made in collaboration with the Sugarhill Gang.
Renowned for his remixing work, Bob Sinclar has remixed for artists such as Ian Pooley, Jamiroquai, Dimitri From Paris, Moby, Fused, and Madonna.
