Madonna

Biography

Madonna, whose full name is Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. She is an American singer, songwriter, actress, producer, director, and businesswoman, widely recognized as the “Queen of Pop.” Her career has been defined by constant reinvention and versatility in music production, songwriting, and visual presentation, while pushing the boundaries of artistic expression in mainstream music.

Before achieving solo fame, she was a drummer, guitarist, and singer in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy. Her solo breakthrough came after signing with Sire Records in 1982 and releasing her self-titled debut album “Madonna” in 1983.

She went on to release a string of major commercial successes, including historic best-sellers such as “Like a Virgin” (1984) and “True Blue” (1986), and she won Grammy Awards with “Ray of Light” (1998) and “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (2005). Among her many number-one singles are “Like a Virgin,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Like a Prayer,” “Vogue,” “Take a Bow,” “Frozen,” “Music,” “Hung Up,” and “4 Minutes.”

Her body of work, which incorporates social, political, sexual, and religious themes, has often generated both controversy and critical acclaim. Alongside music, she developed a film career with roles in movies such as “Desperately Seeking Susan” (1985), “Dick Tracy” (1990), “A League of Their Own” (1992), and “Evita” (1996), the latter earning her a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

As a businesswoman, she founded the company Maverick in 1992, including Maverick Records, one of the most successful artist-run labels in history. Her other ventures span fashion brands, children’s books, health clubs, and film production. She is also active in philanthropy, having founded the Ray of Light Foundation in 1998 and Raising Malawi in 2006.

With sales exceeding 300 million records worldwide, Madonna is certified by Guinness World Records as the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She is the most successful solo artist in the history of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and holds records for the most number-one singles by a female artist in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Her tours, which have grossed $1.5 billion, make her the highest-grossing solo artist in concert history.

Her influence and legacy have been recognized by many institutions: she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, ranked the greatest woman in music by VH1 in 2012, and named the greatest music video artist of all time by MTV and Billboard. Rolling Stone included her in its lists of the 100 greatest artists and the 100 greatest songwriters of all time.
