Daft Punk

Biography

Daft Punk were a French electronic music duo formed in 1993 by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.

The two musicians met in 1987 at Lycée Carnot in Paris. With Laurent Brancowitz they briefly formed the band Darlin' before turning to drum machines and synthesizers, founding Daft Punk after a review described them as “daft punk”.

Their first single, “The New Wave”, was released in 1994 on the Soma Quality Recordings label. The success of “Da Funk” in 1995 led the duo to sign with Virgin Records and release the album Homework in 1997. That project, blending techno, house, acid house and electro, was hailed as a major work and had a lasting influence on dance music, with emblematic tracks such as Around the World. From 1996 to 2008 they were managed by Pedro Winter (Busy P).

The album Discovery (2001) marked a shift toward synthpop, incorporating samples from the 1970s and 1980s. Songs like One More Time, Digital Love and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger met with wide success. The album was accompanied by the animated feature Interstella 5555, produced under the supervision of Leiji Matsumoto.

Human After All (2005) was recorded in just six weeks. Although critical reception was mixed, tracks such as Robot Rock and Technologic stood out. The duo also made their first film, Daft Punk’s Electroma, presented at Cannes in 2006.

Their Alive 2007 tour and the resulting live album were a worldwide triumph, with notable performances at Coachella, the Rock Ness festival and Lollapalooza. These concerts featured their famous light pyramid and elaborate robot costumes.

In 2010 they composed the soundtrack for the film TRON: Legacy, a score combining symphonic orchestra and electronic elements, and appeared in the film. A remix album, TRON: Legacy Reconfigured, followed in 2011.

Their fourth studio album, Random Access Memories (2013), was the result of collaborations with artists such as Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, Giorgio Moroder and Pharrell. The album won several Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Subsequently, Daft Punk collaborated with The Weeknd on the songs Starboy and I Feel It Coming, and produced the track Overnight for the group Parcels.

The duo announced their split in February 2021 via a video titled “Epilogue”. Anniversary reissues of their albums Homework and Random Access Memories were released afterward.

Their influences are varied, citing Brian Wilson, Bob Marley, as well as electronic figures like Romanthony and Todd Edwards, with whom they collaborated. The track Teachers pays homage to several of their inspirations.

Daft Punk cultivated a mysterious image, hiding their faces behind masks and then elaborate robot costumes from 2001 onward. This approach, inspired by works like Phantom of the Paradise, aimed to focus attention on their music and preserve their anonymity.
