Alexander
Biography
Alexander Perls, born on May 11, 1976, is a former American musician, DJ, entrepreneur, and record producer.
His compositions, which he writes, performs, and produces entirely himself, are recognized for their fusion of electronic music, trance, and religious-themed lyrics. His notable projects include 009 Sound System and Aalborg Soundtracks.
He grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at Concord Academy. In 1997, while at University College London, he collaborated with the collective Piano Magic. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1998, he worked for the contemporary art gallery Barbara Gladstone in New York.
In 1999, he co-founded NATOarts, an organization aimed at promoting global security through conceptual art. The withdrawal of government support at the beginning of George W. Bush’s presidency led him to pursue a career as a songwriter.
From 1999 to 2004, he formed the electroacoustic duo Icebreaker International with producer Simon Break, releasing three albums.
Between 2000 and 2008, he primarily composed for European electronic music artists such as David Guetta, Paul Van Dyk, Ian Carey, ATB, and Robert M. He also provided vocals for the project Cosmic Gate on their album Earth Mover.
From 2000 to 2003, he was a member of the electronic music duo Circ, based first in New York and then in Los Angeles, which released the album Love Electric along with several singles and remixes.
His music publishing catalog was represented by Bug Music from 2002 to 2004, then outside the US by Independent Music Group starting in 2004, and internationally by Kobalt Music Group since 2011. In 2011, Track One Recordings hosted a remix contest for his productions Dreamscape and Born to Be Wasted.
Starting in 2007, the introduction of YouTube’s AudioSwap system propelled several tracks from his 009 Sound System project – including Dreamscape, With a Spirit, and Born to Be Wasted – to the top of popularity on the platform due to their favorable alphabetical listing.
In 2025, the song Turn the Lights Off, written by Perls in 2010 and performed by Danish DJ Kato and singer Jon Nørgaard, went viral via a meme featuring Jon Hamm, propelling the track into charts worldwide.
Alexander Perls is married to jewelry designer Sonia Boyajian. He is the CEO of the software company Ezvid, based in Los Angeles, whose flagship video creation software includes tracks from his 009 Sound System and Aalborg Soundtracks projects as free soundtracks for users.
