The Prodigy

The Prodigy

Biography

The Prodigy are a British electronic music group formed in 1990 in Braintree, Essex, by producer and keyboardist Liam Howlett. The original line-up also included dancers Keith Flint, Leeroy Thornhill and Sharky, with the latter leaving the collective as early as 1991. Maxim, then known as Maxim Reality, was soon recruited as MC and vocalist, completing the group’s first line-up.

The project is primarily driven by Liam Howlett, the architect behind the compositions, programming and production. Initially rooted in the underground rave scene, the group’s sound evolved from breakbeat hardcore and rave into a broader style often categorized as big beat and electronica, blending hard-hitting electronic rhythms with elements drawn from other worlds. Keith Flint, initially a dancer, took on the role of lead singer from 1995, bringing a distinctive punk visual and vocal energy, while Leeroy Thornhill performed as a dancer and occasionally played keyboards live.

The group achieved phenomenal global success with its third album, *The Fat of the Land* (1997), propelled by the UK number-one singles Firestarter and Breathe. The track Smack My Bitch Up also had significant impact. Regarded as pioneers of big beat alongside acts such as The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy are credited with bringing electronic dance music to a wide alternative audience, amassing awards and record sales.

In 2000, Leeroy Thornhill left the group to pursue a solo career. Keith Flint was found dead at his home in March 2019, a tragic event that led to the cancellation of the planned concerts. Despite his death, Liam Howlett stated his intention to continue the musical venture under the name The Prodigy. During his career, the producer briefly used the pseudonym Earthbound for certain pressings.

Liam Howlett’s musical influences draw on early electro, citing tracks such as Clear by Cybotron or Al Naafiysh by Hashim. The group is often associated with Techno, breakbeat, Dance and alternative dance, forging an explosive, instantly recognizable sonic identity that has left a mark on the history of electronic music.
