Sonique
Biography
Sonique, born Sonia Marina Clarke on June 21, 1965 in Crouch End, North London, is an English singer, musician and DJ of Trinidadian descent. She first turned to music at age 17, joining a reggae band as a vocalist.
She later collaborated with key figures of the emerging Acid House scene, such as Tim Simenon (Bomb the Bass) and Mark Moore (S’Express). She wrote and recorded songs with them and joined the S’Express lineup for their second album. During this period, she learned the basics of DJing from her peers, practicing for several years before her first public appearance behind the decks in 1994.
Her DJ career took off with a residency at London’s Swankey Mode club from January 1995, followed by a notable residency at Manumission in Ibiza from 1997 to 1999. She is known for blending her powerful and emotive singing talents with her mixing skills to create a unique club atmosphere, often interacting directly with the crowd via the microphone.
Alongside her DJ work, Sonique built a solo career in dance and soul-oriented electronic music. Her biggest hit is the song It Feels so Good, re-released in 2000, which became a number one hit in many countries. She has recorded three solo albums, released over a dozen singles, and collaborated with numerous artists from William Orbit to Josh Wink. She is also known under the aliases Sonia Clarke and DJ Sonique.
