S’Express

S’Express

Biography

S’Express is a British dance music group from the late 1980s, regarded as one of the first commercial successes of acid house.

The collective was formed around DJ, producer and remixer Mark Moore, the project’s central figure.
Members and contributors included Roland Faber, Linda X, Michellé, Linda Love, Sonia Clarke, Jocasta and Mark D.
The project was also released under the alias Victim Of The Ghetto.

The signature track Theme from S-Express, released in 1989, propelled the group to the top of the charts: it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
The song exemplifies sampling culture, incorporating elements of Is It Love You're After and Rose Royce Express by Rose Royce, as well as brass stabs from Crystal World by Crystal Grass.

The debut album, Original Soundtrack (1989), collected the hits Theme from S-Express, Superfly Guy and Hey Music Lover, alongside new compositions.
For this album the lineup included Mark Moore, Michellé, Mark D, Jocasta and sound engineer Pascal Gabriel.
Vocalist Billie Ray Martin also contributed to several tracks.

The second album, Intercourse, saw S’Express reduced to a duo of Mark Moore and vocalist-DJ Sonique; although less successful than the first, it produced several UK-charting singles, including Nothing To Lose.

Subsequently, Sonique launched a successful solo career marked by the hit It Feels So Good, while Mark Moore continued producing, creating numerous remixes and forming the group Needledust.

Musically, S’Express is associated with acid house, hip house and, more generally, 1980s dance and electronic music.
