Sabrina Salerno

Sabrina Salerno

Biography

Sabrina Salerno, whose real name is Sabrina Debora Salerno, is an Italian singer and actress born on 15 March 1968 in Genoa. Also known by the mononym Sabrina Salerno, she began her career in the mid-1980s in Italo disco and Pop.

She debuted in 1986 with Sexy Girl. In 1987, Boys (Summertime Love) made her widely known across Europe, reaching No. 1 in France and Italy and selling 800,000 copies. Its video clip, shot at the pool of the Hotel Florida in Jesolo, was considered too daring and was censored by MTV, with a broadcast ban in the United Kingdom. On 18 May 2019, she discussed the video’s shoot in an interview for the magazine 13 h 15, le samedi, filmed in a villa owned by her husband’s family; she also mentioned pool photos used to promote the song’s re-recordings (in 1995 and 2003) and for magazine covers.

Following that success, she recorded other tracks composed by Italo disco producers, including Hot Girl and All of Me (Boy Oh Boy), with more modest results. She continued her career as a singer, sometimes hosting music TV shows, and appeared in numerous TV films and series, mainly in Italy.

From 2007, she took part in the French touring show RFM Party 80, returning in 2008, 2011 and 2012, and also joined the Stars 80 tour. The film Stars 80, produced by Thomas Langmann and released in 2012, humorously recounts the story of that successful tour, and Sabrina Salerno plays herself in it.

In 2010, she returned to European and international stages with a duet cover of Call Me (originally by American group Blondie) alongside Samantha Fox. In 2015, she was invited to the TV show Danse avec les stars on TF1.
