Modjo

Biography

Modjo is a French house music duo formed in Paris in 1999 by producer Romain Tranchart and singer Yann Destagnol, also known as Yann Destal.

Born in Paris, Romain Tranchart spent part of his childhood in Mexico, Algeria, and Brazil. It was in the latter country that he began learning guitar, finding inspiration in jazz classics and being exposed to bossa nova. Upon returning to Paris, he played in a rock band named ‘Seven Tracks’ before becoming a big fan of house music, influenced by artists like Dj Sneak, Ian Pooley, or Daft Punk. In 1998, he released his first house single under the name Funk Legacy, ‘What You’re Gonna Do Baby’, on Vertigo Records. He then studied at the American School of Modern Music in Paris.

Also from Paris, Yann Destagnol learned to play the flute and clarinet in his childhood. Growing up, he was deeply influenced by the Beatles, the Beach Boys, David Bowie, and other pop acts, starting to play drums by imitating them. He also learned piano and guitar. Fascinated by voices, he appreciated bands like Aerosmith, Police, or Queen and became a big fan of R’n’B divas. After being a drummer and occasional singer in a few bands, he met Romain Tranchart in 1998, marking the beginning of their partnership.

The duo quickly began recording, and from these sessions emerged the track Lady (Hear Me Tonight) in 2000, which brought them international recognition. They also released the tracks Chillin' and No More Tears in 2001, which achieved commercial success. Their music is associated with the house, French house, and disco house genres.

The duo is sometimes referenced under the names Modjo Band, Mojio, Mojo, The Modjo Live Band, モジョ, or モヅヨ.
