Biography

John Legend, born John Roger Stephens, is an American artist born on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio.

He began singing gospel and playing piano at the age of five. After moving to Philadelphia for his studies, he gained recognition as a session musician, notably playing piano on Lauryn Hill’s track Everything Is Everything in 1998.

His career took a decisive turn after meeting Kanye West, who signed him to his label G.O.O.D. Music. It was during this period that he adopted the stage name John Legend.

His first studio album, Get Lifted, released in December 2004, was produced by Kanye West, Will.I. Am of the Black Eyed Peas, as well as his long-time collaborators Dave Tozer and Devo Harris. The single Used To Love U was produced by Kanye West.

The album, a blend of gospel and classic soul, was a major success, driven by the single Ordinary People. It earned him several Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist.

His second album, Once Again, released in October 2006, was produced by Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West, and Will.I. Am. It topped the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

Throughout his career, John Legend has collaborated with numerous renowned artists, contributing his skills as a pianist or backing vocalist on tracks by Jay-Z (Encore), Alicia Keys (You Don't Know My Name), Janet Jackson, Eve, and Twista.

Among his aliases and name variations are J. Legend, J.Legend, and John Stephens.
