Janet Jackson

Biography

Janet Damita Jo Jackson is an American artist born on May 16, 1966, in Gary, Indiana.

She is the tenth and youngest child of the Jackson family, daughter of Joe Jackson and sister of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Jackie Jackson, Tito Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Randy Jackson, Rebbie Jackson, and La Toya Jackson.

Her career began on television, with appearances in series like *The Jacksons*, *Good Times*, *Diff’rent Strokes*, and *Fame*.

She has also acted in films, notably in *Poetic Justice* and *Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps*.

Signed to A&M Records in 1982, she achieved pop icon status with the albums *Control* (1986) and *Rhythm Nation 1814* (1989), created in collaboration with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

These works incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap, and industrial rhythms, ensuring broad crossover success.

In 1991, she signed a record-breaking contract with Virgin Records, making her one of the highest-paid artists in the industry.

The albums *Janet* (1993) and *The Velvet Rope* (1997) helped shape her public image as a sex symbol, establishing her as one of the world’s most eroticized performers.

In the late 1990s, *Billboard* named her the second most successful artist of the decade, behind Mariah Carey.

Her seventh studio album, *All for You* (2001), coincided with MTV celebrating her impact in the first *MTV Icon* special dedicated to her.

After leaving Virgin Records, she released the album *Discipline* (2008) with Island Records.

In 2015, she partnered with BMG Rights Management to launch her own label, Rhythm Nation, and released her eleventh studio album, *Unbreakable*, the same year.

Since then, she has continued to release music as an independent artist.

With over 100 million records sold, she is one of the best-selling music artists in the world.

She has an extensive catalog including singles like Nasty, Rhythm Nation, That's The Way Love Goes, Together Again, and All For You.

She holds the record for the most consecutive top 10 entries on the US Billboard Hot 100, with 18 hits.

She is also the only artist in the chart’s history to have placed seven commercial singles from one album (*Rhythm Nation 1814*) in the top five.

In 2008, *Billboard* ranked her seventh on its list of the greatest Hot 100 artists of all time, and in 2010, fifth among the “50 Greatest R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years.”

In December 2016, the magazine named her the second most successful dance club artist, behind Madonna.

Among her many awards are five Grammy Awards, eleven Billboard Music Awards, eleven American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and eight Guinness World Records entries.

In 2019, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Her innovative sound, elaborate choreography, and engagement with social issues have made her a catalyst for MTV’s growth and a role model for youth, breaking gender and racial barriers.

She is regularly cited as an inspiration for many performers, having raised the standards for sound, spectacle, and sex appeal expected of pop stars.
