Faithless
Biography
Faithless is a British electronic music group formed in London in 1995. The original lineup brought together singer and rapper Maxi Jazz (Maxwell Fraser), keyboardist and producer Sister Bliss (Ayalah Bentovim), instrumentalist and singer Jamie Catto, and keyboardist and producer Rollo Armstrong (Roland Armstrong).
Their music has been described as a cross between trip-hop and techno. Their debut album, Reverence, released in 1996, was an underground success. They reached a broader audience with their second album Sunday 8PM (1998) and its club anthem single, God Is a DJ, which led to higher sales.
Jamie Catto left the band after that album. For Outspective the singer Zoë Johnston joined. In concert the group was often augmented by guitarist Dave Randall and bassist Aubrey Nunn. Rollo’s sister, singer Dido, appears on several Faithless tracks such as Flowerstand Man, Hem of his Garment, One Step Too Far and No Roots; Rollo also produced part of his sister’s debut album, No Angel.
The band released five studio albums, along with remix compilations and an instrumental album. To All New Arrivals (2006) is considered by some to be their most accomplished work. In 2010 they issued The Dance, their best-selling album in Europe to that date.
After the group’s activities as such ended, some original members, including Sister Bliss and Maxi Jazz, continued to perform under the name Faithless Sound System.
