Biography
Charli XCX, born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, is a British singer‑songwriter born on 2 August 1992.
She began sharing music on Myspace in 2008 before immersing herself in London’s rave scene.
Signed to Asylum Records in 2010, she achieved her first international success in 2012 with her contribution to the song I Love It by the Swedish duo Icona Pop, which reached number one in the UK.
Her debut studio album, True Romance (2013), was well received by critics.
In 2014 she featured on the single Fancy by Iggy Azalea and released her own hit Boom Clap, which entered the US Top 10.
Her second album, Sucker (2014), included the singles Break the Rules and Doing It.
From 2015, her work with producers associated with the British collective PC Music steered her toward a more experimental sound blending Pop and electronic.
This period saw the release of the EP Vroom Vroom (2016) and the mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 (2017).
She followed with the albums Charli (2019), featuring the hit 1999, How I’m Feeling Now (2020), created during the lockdowns, and Crash (2022), her first number‑one album in the UK and Australia.
The album Brat (2024) became her second UK number one and was named album of the year by numerous media outlets.
It generated the top 10 single Apple and the number‑one single Guess featuring Billie Eilish.
Brat and its associated projects won three Grammy Awards in 2025, including Best Dance/Electronic Album.
Charli XCX has also co‑written songs for other artists, such as Beg for It for Iggy Azalea, Same Old Love for Selena Gomez, and Señorita for Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.
She is occasionally credited under the aliases Charlotte Aitchison and Charlie Demo, which reflect variations of her name or earlier projects.
Her musical style, often labeled synthpop, electroclash, or electropop, continues to evolve.
In 2024 she received the ASCAP Global Impact Award and was recognized as the first British woman of Indian descent to appear on Gold House’s A100 list.
