Biography
Britney Jean Spears, born December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi and raised in Louisiana, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and businesswoman.
As a child she performed in theatrical productions and television shows; she was part of the cast of The New Mickey Mouse Club from 1993 to 1994 alongside Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, and signed with Jive Records in 1997.
Her debut album, …Baby One More Time (1999), was a huge commercial success: it debuted at number one in the United States and Canada, spent six nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200, and was certified 14× Platinum in the United States; it is the best-selling album by a teenager in the country and worldwide, and the second best-selling album of 1999 in the United States.
Considered a pop icon and nicknamed the ‘Princess of Pop’, she is credited with helping revive teen pop in the late 1990s and early 2000s; she has sold nearly 150 million records worldwide, including over 70 million in the United States, making her one of the best-selling music artists in history.
She has officially released nine studio albums: …Baby One More Time (1999), Oops!… I Did It Again (2000), Britney (2001), In the Zone (2003), Blackout (2007), Circus (2008), Femme Fatale (2011), Britney Jean (2013) and Glory (2016).
Her second album, Oops!… I Did It Again (May 2000), set the SoundScan record for first-week sales for a solo artist in the United States with 1,319,193 copies sold and received an RIAA diamond certification. For her third album, Britney (November 2001), she co-wrote five tracks, taking some creative control.
Her discography also includes two official compilations, two remix albums and one extended play.
In her personal life, she married Kevin Federline in September 2004; the couple had two sons: Sean (born September 2005) and Jayden (born September 2006). Spears filed for divorce in November 2006.
