A*Teens

Biography

A*Teens, also known as A-Teens or A★Teens, are a Swedish pop group from Stockholm, formed in 1998. The group was originally called ABBA Teens but was renamed at the request of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of the legendary Swedish group ABBA, to avoid confusion and give them more freedom to develop their own musical style.

The group consists of four Swedish members: Marie Serneholt (born 1983 in Stockholm), Amit Paul (born 1983 in Boden), Dhani Lennevald (born 1984 in Stockholm) and Sara Lumholdt (born 1984 in Solna). Together they have sold over 8 million albums and 1.5 million singles worldwide.

Their debut album, ABBA Generation, released in 1999, was made up entirely of ABBA covers reinterpreted with a modern pop/techno touch. The album reached number one on the Swedish charts and enjoyed international success, peaking at 71 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. That same year the group toured with *NSYNC and Britney Spears.

Their second album, Teen Spirit, released in 2001, moved away from ABBA covers to present a more mature, original pop sound; it sold three million copies worldwide and reached number 50 on the Billboard 200. To promote it, the group toured the United States with Aaron Carter.

In 2002 the group released a third album, Pop Til You Drop, exclusively in the United States; a European and Asian version titled New Arrival followed in 2003. Some of the material was co-written by A*Teens members, although most tracks came from producers in the United States, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Pop Til’ You Drop peaked at number 45 on the Billboard 200. To promote these albums the group ran their own 2002 tour with Play, LMNT and Jump5.

Their fourth album, Greatest Hits, was released in Europe in 2004; although a compilation, it included a few new songs, including a cover of the single I Promised Myself. The album sold 500,000 copies worldwide. After its release the members took a well-deserved break to pursue solo projects, leaving the possibility of a reunion open. The group was split from 2004 to 2025. In 2026 they released a new single, Iconic, which they presented at Melodifestivalen with the aim of representing Sweden at Eurovision.
