Daddy Yankee

Biography

Daddy Yankee, born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, was born on February 3, 1976, in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

In his youth, he was interested in music and baseball, but a gunshot wound prevented him from pursuing a sports career.

He then turned to the Puerto Rican underground rap movement, which would become reggaeton, receiving lessons from other artists in the genre.

His solo career began with the album “No Mercy” in 1995.

He also formed a duo with Nicky Jam before continuing solo.

The albums “El Cartel” and “El Cartel II” positioned him as a pioneer of reggaeton.

The album “El Cangri.com” in 2002 marked his first international success.

His album “Barrio Fino” (2004) won numerous awards, including a Premio Lo Nuestro and a Latin Billboard, and was nominated for Latin Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards.

He achieved major commercial success in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Japan.

In 2007, he released “El Cartel: The Big Boss”, the top-selling Latino album of that year.

He promoted it with an international tour that broke attendance records in Ecuador and Bolivia.

His guest appearances are featured on over 70 albums, including compilations like “Mas Flow 2” and “Blin Blin Vol. 1”.

Outside of music, he also worked as an actor and producer.

He founded and managed several record labels throughout his career, including El Cartel Records.

On March 20, 2022, Daddy Yankee announced his retirement from the music industry.

He is also known by the aliases Winchester Yankee and Raymond Ayala, as well as various name variations like D. Yankee, DY, El Cangri Daddy Yankee, or Yankee Man.
