Ultra-Sonic

Ultra-Sonic

Biography

Ultra-Sonic is a Scottish electronic music group formed in the early 1990s by Rodger Hughes and Mallorca Lee. Their first single, Obsession (1991, Clubscene Records), propelled them onto the rave scene. The original lineup also included singer Heather Allan, whose vocals contributed to the track’s success.

Between 1991 and 1998, the band experienced an intense period of success, releasing 14 singles, 4 studio albums, 1 live album, and 2 tour videos. Their sales were particularly strong in Scotland, often surpassing established dance groups. Their albums sold over 50,000 copies in the UK alone, with pre-orders reaching 30,000 units. The single Annihilating Rhythm sold over half a million copies worldwide. In total, combined single and album sales approached 400,000 units in less than three years.

The founding duo split in the late 1990s after The Hour Of Chaos. Mallorca Lee continued his career as a producer (including joining Public Domain) while Rodger Hughes revived Ultra-Sonic in the mid-2000s with Pete Coughlan, resulting in the album Annihilating Rhythms. From June 2013, Mallorca Lee began performing again under the name Ultra-Sonic Anthems, giving sold-out concerts and launching his own “1994” events in Glasgow. The band was managed by Bill Grainger Management and is associated with styles like happy hardcore, techno, trance, and hardcore techno, also using aliases such as Experimental Fluxtuation, Bass Baby, Brooklyn Boy, and Lord Michael.
