Shannon
Biography
Shannon, born Shannon Brenda Greene on May 2, 1958, in Washington, D.C., is an American singer and songwriter who grew up in Brooklyn.
Her career was defined by the success of the innovative and pulsating dance classic Let the Music Play, released as a single in 1983. Produced by Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa, the track was characterized by heavy, staccato beats and a synthetic bassline, defining it as an electro single. It became a massive global club and pop chart hit, peaking at number 8 on the Billboard chart and selling eight million copies.
Her debut album, also titled Let the Music Play and released in 1984, was certified gold. She followed with other hits like Give Me Tonight and My Heart's Divided. Her second album, Do You Wanna Get Away, arrived in 1985, followed by a third, Love Goes All the Way, in 1986, which spawned the singles Dancin', Criminal, and Prove Me Right.
Considered a pioneer, Shannon’s music and mid-80s hits helped lay the groundwork for 90s electronic genres. She dominated the dance floors for a decade and was dubbed the International Dance Queen of the World.
In 1998, she collaborated with German producer and artist Sash! on the track Move Mania, marking the beginning of her comeback. Remixes of Give Me Tonight and Let The Music Play were released in 1999 and 2000, preceding the U.S. release of her album The Best Is Yet To Come in 2000.
She has also used the alias Bebi S..
