Saint Etienne

Saint Etienne

Biography

Saint Etienne is an indie dance and indie pop trio formed in Croydon, England, in 1990.

It was founded in January 1990 by journalist Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs; after recording two singles with guest singers, Sarah Cracknell joined them as a permanent member.

The band helped define indie dance in the early 1990s by combining the production values of the dance-pop that emerged after the Second Summer of Love with intelligent lyrics and a self-aware production drawn from the indie scene.

The band’s name is inspired by the French football team AS Saint-Étienne.

On 23 May 2025 it was announced that their latest studio album of unreleased material, titled International, would be released in September 2025; the band clarified that they were not splitting up but would not release any new material.
