Nomad

Biography

Nomad is a house music duo from England, consisting of Damon Rochefort and Steve McCutcheon, with the participation of Sharon Dee Clarke. The project’s name is a palindrome of the first name of its main founder, Damon.

The group had several major hits on the dance charts and the UK Singles Chart. Their biggest success is the track (I Wanna Give You) Devotion, credited as ‘Nomad featuring MC Mikee Freedom’, which reached number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and number two on the UK chart in 1990 (or 1991 depending on sources). The group continued to produce hits beyond the 1990s, such as With You which reached number two on the dance chart in 2000.

Before forming Nomad, Damon Rochefort began his writing career as a columnist for the specialist magazine ‘Blues & Soul’, before working for ‘Smash Hits’ and the Bizarre column of The Sun newspaper at the age of 18.

After Nomad’s success and world tours, Damon Rochefort turned to writing and producing for other artists, including Elton John, Ru Paul, Bad Boys Inc, Michelle Gayle, and Kim Wilde. He also developed a career in television and theatre.

He wrote for the sitcom ‘Birds Of A Feather’ before creating his own original shows for the BBC, such as ‘Boyz R Us’, a series about a boy band and its manipulative manager, ‘The Bad Old Days’, and ‘Last Gasp’. He also presented the dance show BPM on ITV for two years, as well as his own live talk show on BBC Wales, ‘Damon Rochefort Tonight’.

His first theatrical work, ‘Live At Carnegie Hall’, was staged in collaboration with the Royal Ballet. It was a tribute to Judy Garland that premiered at the Royal Opera House and subsequently toured the USA and Australia.

Other members or collaborators associated with the Nomad project include Bruno and Anthony Lopez.
