Moloko

Moloko

Biography

Moloko was a British electronic music duo, formed in 1995 in Sheffield by producer Mark Brydon and singer Róisín Murphy.

The band’s name is derived from the Nadsat word “moloko” (milk) from Anthony Burgess’s novel “A Clockwork Orange”. Their meeting became legendary: Murphy, with no prior experience, reportedly approached Brydon at a party with the line “Do you like my tight sweater?”, which later became the title of their first album.

The duo debuted with the “Moloko EP” in May 1995, followed by the album “Do You Like My Tight Sweater?”. Their second album, “I Am Not a Doctor” (1998), included the song Sing It Back. A remix by Boris Dlugosch became a major commercial hit (UK top 5 in 1999).

Their third album, “Things to Make and Do” (2000), marked a shift towards more organic instrumentation and provided the single The Time Is Now. For tours, the duo expanded with additional musicians.

Murphy and Brydon ended their personal relationship in 2001 but continued to collaborate. Their final studio album, “Statues”, was released in 2003, reflecting the tensions of their separation.

The band released a live DVD, “11,000 Clicks” (2004), before disbanding. Murphy embarked on a solo career. A compilation, “Catalogue”, was released in 2006. Since then, Moloko has been on indefinite hiatus.
