Klingande
Biography
Klingande is the stage name of French DJ and producer Cédric Steinmyller, born on 14 May 1990. The project is associated with tropical house and notably makes prominent use of piano and saxophone.
Klingande was originally formed in December 2012 as a duo made up of Steinmyller and fellow Frenchman Edgar Catry (also born in 1990). They had known each other since childhood, having met at around age 10 at a school in Croix, in northern France. Steinmyller was initially more focused on solfège before standing out as a DJ, while Catry was more interested in piano, which he studied for more than four years. Steinmyller later moved to London to study for one year at Point Blank Music College, then returned to his hometown; after spending time again with Catry, they discovered a shared admiration for deep house producers such as Bakermat and Nico Push, and the project came together quickly.
The group’s name and several track titles are in Swedish: “Klingande” means “ringing” or “tinkling.” The titles Jubel and Punga follow the same idea: “Jubel” refers to overflowing joy or exaltation, and “Punga” means “to pay” or “to shell out.” Steinmyller feels the language sounds good both spoken and sung.
In 2013, the duo released its first two singles, Jubel and Punga. Jubel became a major hit, reaching No. 1 in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Belgium (Flanders), Italy, Poland, and Estonia, and peaking at No. 5 in France.
In 2014, the project released a remix of Extraordinary by Clean Bandit. That same year, Steinmyller decided to remove Edgar Catry from the group and continue using the name Klingande as a solo act.
On 2 March 2015, Steinmyller released his first solo single, Riva (Restart the Game), featuring French singer Broken Back. It was released via Klingande Music with an exclusive license to Ultra Records, and an official music video was uploaded on 19 March 2015 through Ultra Records’ YouTube channel. The track charted in multiple countries (including France, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland) and was certified gold in Italy by FIMI.
In 2016, he released two singles: Losing U (featuring Daylight) and Somewhere New (with M-22 and uncredited vocals from English recording artist Jodie Connor). An official music video for Losing U was uploaded by Ultra Records on 11 March 2016.
In 2017, Klingande released Pumped Up, with uncredited vocals from Lauren “Lyon” Malyon; it charted in four countries and reinterprets Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People. On 26 April 2019, he released Ready for Love with British singer-songwriter Joe Killington and French harmonica player Greg Zlap, via Ultra Music.
In 2019, Klingande released his first solo studio album, The Album.
