Infernal

Infernal

Biography

Infernal is a Danish house and pop duo formed by Lina Rafn (born 1976) and Paw Lagermann (born 1977), both from Copenhagen.

The group’s name comes from the well-known Danish nightclub Diskotek IN, also located in Copenhagen. Their first single, ‘Sorti De L’Enfer’, originated from performances under the name Bordeaux (2) with Kristian Paulsen and Nicolai Villum Jensen. After those members left, Søren Haahr, an events coordinator and DJ at Diskotek IN, joined the project, giving rise to Infernal in 1997.

Unlike many other dance acts of the late 1990s, Infernal write and produce their music independently, sometimes collaborating with co-writers such as Adam Powers. Their style evolved from eurodance toward a more traditional pop sound while retaining prominent trance elements.

Their second album, ‘Muzaik’ (2001), even included chillout tracks that were featured on numerous successful compilations. After the release of their debut album ‘Infernal Affairs’ in 1998, Søren Haahr left the group, though he continued to collaborate occasionally, notably on the track ‘Banjo Thing!’ in 2003.

Their major international breakthrough came in 2006 with the single From Paris To Berlin, from the album of the same name. The single was the second best-selling in England that year, reaching number 2 on the UK Top 40, behind only ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley.

The album marked a split from their label EMI (FLEX Records) and a shift from euro house to more commercial pop. In Denmark the album remained on the charts for over four years and was reissued in various versions due to its international success.

As a live act Infernal use all traditional instruments (guitars, drums, keyboards) and perform everything live. They released their first live DVD in April 2009, recorded at Danmarks Smukkeste Festival 2008 in Skanderborg.
