Biography
Elena Gheorghe is a Romanian singer, born on 30 July 1985 in Bucharest. Born into a family of Romanian and Aromanian origin, her father is an Aromanian Orthodox priest. She began performing folk music at age three and took singing lessons at the National Children’s Palace.
Her career took a major turn in early 2003 when she joined the pop-latino group Mandinga; with them she released the album …De Corazón in June 2003. Mandinga placed 4th in Romania’s national selection for Eurovision in 2005 with the song My Sun. Elena left the group in February 2006 to begin a solo career, working with producer Laurenţiu Duţă.
Her first solo album, Vocea Ta (Ta Voix), was released in June 2006. The title single became a hit, reaching the top 10 of the Romanian Top 100 and earning her the Best Performer 2006 award from Radio România Actualităţi. In 2007 she won Best Song at the Romanian Top Hit Music Awards for Your Brown Eyes and released her second album Te Ador the same year. Part of her repertoire, such as Ma ţi s-adar or Lilicea Vreariei, is sung in Aromanian.
In 2009 Elena represented Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest with The Balkan Girls, after winning the national selection; she finished 9th in the semi-final and 19th in the final in Moscow, which raised her profile across Europe.
In the following years she achieved several international dance and pop hits: Disco Romancing became a hit in Romania, reached the top 10 in Hungary and charted in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia. The next single, Midnight Sun, also reached the top 10 in the Netherlands and Romania. In 2011 she collaborated with Dony on the single Hot Girls and embarked on a European tour. The album Disco Romancing was released in a limited edition in 2012 in Spain and Japan, spawning other singles such as Your Captain Tonight, Amar Tu Vida and Hypnotic.
In 2016 she was chosen by Disney to perform the main theme of the animated series Elena of Avalor. In 2019, on Aromanian National Day, she organized a musical event dedicated to that culture. She continued to release music, for example the single Brațele in March 2022.
Throughout her career Elena Gheorghe has been signed to labels such as Cat Music, Major and Roton Music. Her musical style centers mainly on pop, dance and house.
