Captain Jack
Biography
Captain Jack is a German electronic music production project, specifically Eurohouse and Eurodance, formed in 1996.
The project was originally led by the singer and primary songwriter Francisco Alejandro Gutierrez, born in Cuba, known by the stage name Franky Gee. On stage his persona—wearing a stylized military uniform with a red cap—was a central gimmick; this concept, featuring songs about peace and love over rhythms evoking a military setting, was a protest against his past service in the United States Army, which he undertook for financial reasons.
The lineup saw several changes of female vocalists over the years: the original vocalist on the first two albums was Liza Da Costa, who later pursued a solo career; she was replaced in 1999 by Maria Lucia ‘Maloy’ Lozanes, then in 2001 by Ilka-Anna-Antonia Traue, known as Illi Love. The last singer to perform with the group was Sunny.
The group’s first two albums were heavily marked by sexual innuendo in their lyrics, covers and performances; this direction changed after the departure of Liza Da Costa.
Captain Jack achieved significant commercial success in Europe, earning 19 gold and platinum records. Their music is also known to players of Konami rhythm games (such as Dance Dance Revolution, beatmania and Dance Maniax) via the Dancemania compilation series.
The project was initially initiated by Udo Niebergall and Richard Witte; after two albums, Richard Witte was replaced by Eric Schnecko as producer and songwriter.
The group’s history was marked by the tragic death of its frontman, Franky Gee, from a cerebral hemorrhage on 22 October 2005, which led to the dissolution of the lineup.
The project was revived in 2008 with a new frontman, Bruce Eric Lacy (Captain), alongside singer Michelle Stanley. Former contributors also include captains Sharky Durban and Franky Gee, and singers Sabine Repas, Laura Martin and Jamie Lee.
