Cappella

Cappella

Biography

Cappella is an iconic Italian electronic music group, formed in 1987 by producer Gianfranco Bortolotti of the Media Records label. Active mainly from the late 1980s through the turn of the millennium, the project scored nine Top 10 hits in Europe and three No. 1s, including the signature tracks Move on Baby and U & Me.

Their style evolved from sample‑heavy house tracks like Helyom Halib in the late 1980s to mid‑1990s eurodance hits such as U Got 2 Know and especially U Got 2 Let the Music, which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1993.

After a long hiatus, the project was revived in 2013 by Gianfranco Bortolotti in partnership with Lis Birks. The new lineup featured the couple Lis Birks (vocals) and Marcus Birks (rap); Marcus died of COVID‑19 on 27 August 2021. In January 2022, Lis Birks announced she was stepping away from performing to manage the group with Gianfranco Bortolotti.

Lineup changes continued: singer Vikki Waters and rapper Steve Lewis initially formed the new lineup; Steve Lewis was replaced by Jay McCurdy in June 2022, then by Andrew "Aggz" Gidney in November 2023, while DJ Aroxx (Andy Critchlow) joined the live act. Vikki Waters and Aggz are now the official touring members across the UK and Europe.

In May 2023, Cappella announced its first single in nearly twenty years, Happy Phonk, released on 13 October 2023. Gianfranco Bortolotti is also working on new material to modernize the sound while preserving the group’s legendary essence.

Many artists have contributed to Cappella over time, including Max Persona, Paola Peroni, Eileina Dennis, Kelly Overett, Rod Bishop, Ricardo Overman, and Patric Osborne.
