Biography

Anna Vissi, full name Άννα Βίσση, is a Cypriot singer, songwriter, radio producer, and stage actress, born on December 20, 1957, in Pyla, Larnaca District.

Her music career began early when she won a television singing competition at the age of thirteen. In 1973, her family moved to Athens, Greece. She achieved her first major success in September 1977 by winning first place at the 16th Thessaloniki Song Festival with the song As Kanoume Apopse Mian Arhi.

She participated in the Eurovision Song Contest three times: in 1980, she represented Greece with Autostop; two years later, in 1982, she represented her native Cyprus with Mono I Agapi; and she represented Greece again in 2006 with Everything.

Her meeting with composer and producer Níkos Karvelas in the early 1980s was a decisive turning point in her career and personal life. He encouraged her to evolve musically, shifting from an éntekhno style towards pop and dance-pop. Together, they founded the label Carvi Productions in 1982, a portmanteau of their surnames. The couple married in May 1983 in Larnaca and had a daughter, Sophía Karvela, in November of the same year. Although they separated in 1992, their divorce was not finalized until well after the year 2000.

In 1988, she began working as a radio producer. She is also known for her performance at the closing ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games in August 2004.

Anna Vissi comes from a family of artists. She is the older sister of singer Níki Boúfi – Víssi and the younger sister of Lía Víssi. She is the aunt of her sisters’ children, including Zanína and Nick Piliouris.
