Sonny

Sonny Leonard Grootscholten (born February 24, 1994) is a Dutch DJ, music producer and songwriter, professionally known as Sonny.

Born in Honselersdijk, the Netherlands, he started playing drums, keyboard and flute at the age of six. He became interested in progressive house after hearing Save the World, then taught himself how to produce by downloading FL Studio and began composing.

Early in his career, Sonny built momentum through a run of breakthrough releases under his previous alias Asonn. He collaborated with Bobby Burns on Sahara and with MC Ambush on Pyro; both tracks reached number one on Beatport within a week of release.

He also partnered with Heineken and UEFA to write and produce the official UEFA Champions League “Ibiza Final” commercial. In 2015, he shifted toward productions for influencers and YouTubers, contributing to multiple number-one charting songs including You, Holding On and This Christmas. Four of his songs went viral, surpassing 4 billion views on YouTube.

Sonny teamed up with Mike Williams to co-create the official DLDK Amsterdam 2017 anthem, Waiting for You. He also contributed to Allebei Kwijt by Yung Volwassen.

In 2024, Sonny co-wrote and co-produced Gravity by Martin Garrix, in collaboration with Sem Vox and featuring Jaimes. The track was first premiered in March 2024 by Martin Garrix at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida, and was released on October 18, 2024.

For live shows, he played his first major date in 2016 at “Don’t Let Daddy Know” in Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome alongside Steve Angello, Tiësto, R3hab and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. His first international performance followed at “Don’t Let Daddy Know” in Edinburgh, Scotland with Nicky Romero, Showtek and Laidback Luke. In 2017, he closed and headlined the “Westlandse Cross” festival near his hometown.
