
Vicky Leandros
Biography
Vicky Leandros, born Βασιλική Παπαθανασίου (Vassiliki Papathanasiou), is a singer of Greek origin based in Germany. She is the daughter of singer, musician, and composer Leo Leandros, who introduced her to the world of music.
Her international career took off in 1967 when she represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song L'amour est bleu, which placed fourth and became a major commercial success. She won the same contest in 1972, again for Luxembourg, with the song Après toi.
With her international roots, she early on considered herself an artist at home not only in Germany and her birth country Greece, but worldwide. She has released over 400 albums in more than 50 countries, making her the most successful German-speaking artist of all time, with over 55 million records sold. Her hits extended to Japan, the USA, Canada, South Africa, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, and many other countries.
Vicky Leandros has received numerous awards, including over 80 gold and platinum records. In 2015, she was decorated with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her social commitment. She also engaged in politics, having been elected as a city councilor in Piraeus, Greece, with responsibilities in cultural and international development, and also held the position of vice mayor.
She dared to venture into other genres on several occasions, for example by successfully participating in the TV show “The Masked Singer” where she reached the semi-finals in 2020. She is known by many variations of her name, such as Vicky Léandros, Βίκυ Λέανδρος, or Viky.
