Camisra
Biography
Camisra is one of the aliases of British DJ and producer Paul Newman, who also uses the pseudonyms Tall Paul, Escrima, Sunglasses Ron, and Decktition.
He began his DJ career in 1987 at the age of sixteen by hosting parties at Turnmills, his father’s London club. That same year, he launched the pirate radio station Touchdown FM and secured a slot on Sunrise FM.
In 1990, he landed his first residency at the gay club Trade, known for its musical avant-garde. This allowed him to establish his hard and energetic house style. He then became a resident at the Zap Club in Brighton, leading to regular engagements at Gardening Club’s “Club For Life”. He went on to hold residencies across the UK, notably at the Gallery (Turnmills), and performed at major events like Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Sundissential, Cream, and Golden. His international fame took him to play worldwide, including Canada, Japan, Australia, and South America.
His first vinyl release, “Love Rush”, came out in 1992 and became an anthem at Trade. Under the name Tall Paul, he produced the classic “Rock Da House” with Red Jerry from Hooj Choons, which reached number 11 in the charts in 1997. Other notable productions include “Deeper” and “Train of Thought” under the alias Escrima, as well as the hit Let Me Show You by Camisra, which entered directly at number 5 in the UK charts.
Recognized for his work as a producer and remixer, he collaborated with established artists such as New Order, Stone Roses, Erasure, Human League, Marc Almond, Blondie, and Duran Duran. This activity bolstered his reputation in the dance scene and earned him regular placements in DJ Magazine’s top producer rankings.
He founded the label Duty Free Recordings, equipped with a studio at Turnmills, which released works by Js16, Robbie Rivera, Radical Playaz, DJ Lottie, Durango-95, Dave Aude, and Fergie. Newman also produced his own tracks there, such as “Be There” and “Freebase”.
In the compilation domain, he signed with Ministry of Sound and created acclaimed mixes, including “Dance Nation 6”, “The Ibiza Annual 2”, “Millennium Annual”, “Dance Nation 7”, “Headliners”, “The Annual”, and “The Clubber’s Guide to 2001”. In 2001, he launched “Club Nation America” at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, targeting the North American market.
Paul Newman hosts the radio show “The Mix Down Session” on Kiss FM in London, extended to the national emap network. He was the house judge for the Diesel U-Music 2002 contest and presents the “Tall Paul Smirnoff Experience Radio Show” on Kiss 100.
In 2002, he released his first artistic album in North America, “Back and Forth”, and continues to perform live worldwide. He also released a live mix recorded at the Giant superclub in Los Angeles for Moonshine Music.
