Cassius

Biography

Cassius was a French electronic duo formed by producers Philippe Cerboneschi (Philippe Zdar) and Hubert Blanc-Francard (Boom Bass). Their collaboration began in 1994 with a hip-hop project, La Funk Mob, before they turned to house and techno.

Under the name Cassius they produced their first remixes in 1997 for artists such as Air and Daft Punk. Their debut album, “1999”, released in 1999, compiled instrumentals recorded in the previous two years; the single Cassius 1999 reached the UK Top 40. Other tracks from the album, such as Feeling For You and La Mouche, were also released.

The second album, “Au Rêve” (2002), incorporated more vocals: Jocelyn Brown appears on I'm A Woman and Steve Edwards on The Sound Of Violence, with guests such as Ghostface Killah (Wu-Tang Clan) and Leroy Burgess.

In 2006 Cassius returned with the more experimental single Toop Toop, followed by the album “15 Again”, which featured an increased number of sung collaborations. During rehearsals for that album’s tour they launched the Cassius Workshop project by making a cappella versions available to invite fans to create remixes; hundreds of reinterpretations were received.

The duo founded the label Cassius Records and also produced under other aliases, notably La Funk Mob and L'H0mme Qui Valait 3 Milliard$. On 19 June 2019, Philippe Zdar died after a fall. The fifth album, “Dreems”, was released shortly after and was presented as the group’s last, marking the end of the project.
