Jam and Spoon
Biography
Jam & Spoon was an influential electronic music duo from Frankfurt, Germany, active from 1991 to 2006.
The duo consisted of composers and producers Rolf Ellmer, also known by the alias Jam El Mar, and Markus Löffel, whose stage name was Mark Spoon. They also worked under other notable pseudonyms such as Tokyo Ghetto Pussy, Storm and Big Room, with credits on the respective albums sometimes listed under the names Trancy Spacer and Spacy Trancer.
Their debut album, *BreaksUnit1*, was released in 1991. They scored their first major success in 1992 with Stella, regarded as a trance classic. A British Radio 1 DJ even said the track had “saved” techno music, giving the genre renewed momentum. It was widely played, remixed and bootlegged on the club scene for many years.
The duo also produced remixes for the singles [song]The Age of Love[/song] and [song]Go[/song]. Their first international and commercial breakthrough came in 1994 with the singles Right In the Night, Find Me and Angel, featuring the vocals of singer Plavka Lonich.
Their discography includes the albums *Tripomatic Fairytales 2001* and *Tripomatic Fairytales 2002* (1994), followed by *Disco 2001* (1995) under the name Tokyo Ghetto Pussy, *Kaleidoscope* (1997), *Stormjunkie* (2000) under the name Storm, and finally *Tripomatic Fairytales 3003* (2005).
In 2000, their remix of The Chase—a 1979 track by Giorgio Moroder, credited as “Giorgio Moroder vs. Jam & Spoon”—reached No. 1 on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. In June 2002, Be.Angeled reached No. 4 on the same chart.
Markus Löffel (Mark Spoon) died of a heart attack in his Berlin apartment on 11 January 2006, aged 39.
In September 2006, a double album titled *Remixes & Club Classics* was released in his honor. It is the first compilation of the duo’s work and includes an exclusive track, Be.Angeled – Tribute to Mark Spoon, performed live at the Love Parade 2006 in Berlin.
