Loleatta Holloway

Biography

Loleatta Holloway, born on November 5, 1946 in Chicago, began her career in gospel alongside Albertina Walker and the Caravans. From 1976, she moved into Disco on Salsoul Records, recording classics such as Love Sensation and Hit and Run. She also appeared on Relight My Fire by Dan Hartman. In 1984, she left Salsoul and worked on the unfinished album “Crash Goes Love”, of which only two singles were released on Streetwise. Over the years, her tracks were widely sampled by the House scene. Black Box used her vocal from Love Sensation for Ride on Time without initial authorization; she sued and obtained a share of the royalties. In 1991, Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch sampled the same track for Good Vibrations, this time with credit and payment. In 2003, Relight My Fire (credited to Martin Solveig featuring Loleatta Holloway) reached No. 5 on the dance charts. In 2006, Love Sensation '06 charted in the Dutch Top 40 and the UK Singles Chart. Loleatta Holloway died on March 21, 2011 from heart failure at the age of 64.
