Dakota
Biography
Dakota is the stage name of Sophie Ann Elton, a British singer based in London.
She became widely known in 2015 for providing vocals on Jonas Blue’s tropical house cover of Fast Car, adapted from Tracy Chapman’s 1988 single. The track peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, behind Pillowtalk by Zayn Malik, and stayed in the UK top 10 for 11 weeks. Its UK peak placed it higher than Tracy Chapman’s original, which reached No. 5 in May 1988 and charted one position higher upon a re-release in April 2011.
The Jonas Blue & Dakota version also hit iTunes No. 1 in Germany, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand, and reached No. 1 on Spotify’s US viral chart. The single was certified Platinum in Italy and the UK, 2× Platinum in New Zealand, and 3× Platinum in Australia. It has been streamed over 537 million times on Spotify and has surpassed 199 million views on Vevo.
On 20 July 2018, Dakota released the EP Call Me When You Get This, which includes the singles Sober (featuring British rapper Not3s) and Hate Loving You.
