The Cheeky Girls
Biography
The duo The Cheeky Girls is formed by the twin sisters Gabriela Irimia and Monica Irimia, originally from Romania.
In their youth in Romania, they studied gymnastics and ballet, even touring with the Hungarian National Opera. They moved to London with their mother in 2002.
They rose to fame after unsuccessfully auditioning for the British TV shows Popstars: The Rivals and Model Behaviour. This media exposure was enough to launch their pop career.
Their first single, The Cheeky Song (Touch my Bum), achieved significant commercial success by charting in the UK top 5 for five weeks, even reaching number two. However, it was voted the worst pop record of all time in a Channel 4 poll in January 2004.
Their music, mainly disco-pop, is often considered aimed at a young audience. All their songs are written by their mother, who also manages them.
They released several singles and a first album in the UK, while touring in Europe and Asia. After their record label Multiply was liquidated in 2004, they declined several offers from other labels to found their own, named XBN.
They have never sung live and have received generally very negative reviews from music journalists, despite a series of successes in the British charts.
In November 2004, they participated in a celebrity edition of the game show The Weakest Link, where they achieved good results. In May 2005, they helped inaugurate the new studios of Big L Radio London.
They are also involved in charitable work, notably supporting the ChildLine association, dedicated to children.
The group opened the new HMV store in Harlow, Essex, following the expansion of The Water Gardens shopping centre.
They worked on a new album planned for spring 2006, set to include new compositions as well as a cover of I'm Too Sexy.
