Baccara
Biography
Baccara is a Spanish female duo created in 1977 by Mayte Mateos in partnership with María Mendiola. Their disco-pop repertoire includes international hits from the late 1970s such as Yes Sir, I Can Boogie and Sorry I'm a Lady.
In 1978 the duo represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest with Parlez-Vous Français?, finishing seventh. Their style blends disco with Spanish influences, and they were acclaimed for their stage performances.
After their split in 1981, several reformations took place: Mayte Mateos continued under the name Baccara (sometimes called “New Baccara”) with successive partners such as Jane Comerford, Cristina Sevilla and Marissa Perez; María Mendiola formed New Baccara with Marissa Perez before using the name Baccara on her own. Mayte Mateos also created Baccara 2000 with Cristina Sevilla, which produced re-recordings including Yes Sir I Can Boogie '99.
Over the years the members have included Helen De Quiroga, Jane Comerford, María Mendiola, Cristina Sevilla, Mayte Mateos, Marissa Perez and Paloma Blanco, sometimes making attribution of recordings complex.
In 2021 a dance remix of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie by Scottish DJ George GBX Bowie, featuring the voices of María Mendiola and Cristina Sevilla, reached number eleven on the UK charts. María Mendiola died in September 2021; Cristina Sevilla chose to continue the group in tribute to her legacy.
