Biography
Amesha is the stage name of Molly Alice Smitten-Downes, born 2 April 1985, an English singer and songwriter.
She also works under the aliases Molly Smitten-Downes and Amira.
She was a member of the British Dance project Stunt, which achieved chart success in 2008 with the collaborative mashup Raindrops (Encore une fois) with Sash!, combining Raindrops (2006) and Encore une fois (1997). In 2009 she teamed up with Swedish producer Basshunter for I Will Learn to Love Again, featured on his second UK album “Bass Generation”.
An acoustic EP, “Fly Away with Me”, was released on 18 December 2011. The track Shadows was sampled by artist Marger and released on iTunes via 360 Records on 21 August 2011. In April 2013 she released Beneath The Lights with Swedish producer Anders Hansson through his project Dream Beats. Her collaboration with producer Darren Styles, Never Forget, was written and recorded in 2012.
After support and later exposure via BBC Introducing, she was approached by Guy Freeman, the BBC’s Eurovision executive producer and head of delegation, to write an entry for 2014. On 3 March 2014 the BBC announced she would represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2014 with Children of the Universe, which she wrote herself. She signed with Warner Music UK on 1 April 2014 and announced a release date of 28 April 2014, with digital download available from 15 April. The song was recorded in Stockholm with a 28-piece orchestra and produced by Anders Hansson; the official video was released on 23 April 2014. In the 10 May 2014 final she placed 17th out of 26 with 40 points.
After Eurovision, it was announced on 5 June 2014 that she would perform at Glastonbury Festival on 27 June 2014. In 2015 she teamed up with German DJ and producer Zwette on Rush, released on Spinnin’ Records and remixed by Sam Feldt. In September 2015 she performed Rush with Sam Feldt at V Festival in Chelmsford. Producer Hudson Mohawke sampled a remix of Beneath The Lights for Shadows from his album “Lantern”.
