Maxx

Biography

Maxx, whose name is the abbreviation of Max-imum X-tasy, is a German eurodance project formed in Berlin in 1993 by producer Jürgen Wind (also known as George Torpey) and music businessman David Brunner (The Hitman). The project achieved international success in the mid-1990s thanks to a characteristic blend of ragga rap, female vocals and catchy rhythms.

The first single, Get-A-Way, released in October 1993, propelled the group into the spotlight: it reached the Top 10 in Germany and the Top 5 in the United Kingdom, Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands, earning a Gold certification in Germany and Silver in the UK. Vocals were performed by rapper Gary B. and singer Samira Besic, who only took part in that recording session; for the music video, dancer and model Alice Montana lip-synced the lyrics.

In early 1994 the British singer-songwriter Linda Meek was recruited as the project’s lead voice and recorded the second single, No More (I Can't Stand It), which also became a Top 10 hit in Europe. Together with rapper Gary B. she toured and made numerous television appearances on shows such as Top of the Pops and Bravo TV.

The album To The Maxximum was released in June 1994 and notably reached number ten in Sweden. It produced a third hit, You Can Get It, which reached number 21 in the UK and number 13 in Finland. Other tracks like Power of Love, I Can Make You Feel Like and the non-album single Move Your Body followed in 1995.

Despite a striking start, commercial success declined in 1995 and, due to internal tensions and falling sales, Maxx split at the end of the same year.

Others associated with the project include Boris Köhler and Frank Hassas. The project sometimes used the aliases The Hitmen, Dakota O’Neill or Dawhite.
