Vengaboys
Biography
Vengaboys is a Dutch eurodance group formed in 1992 by Dutch producers and DJs Danski (Dennis van den Driesschen) and Delmundo (Wessel van Diepen). The group’s name originates from a Spanish guest singer on a previous producers’ project, Nakatomi, who often repeated the word «¡Venga!»; the Spanish pronunciation of «V» as a soft «B» produced «Bengaboys», which could be translated as «The ‘Come on’ Boys».
The project took off from 1997. Between 1995 and 1996 the producer duo was joined by four dancers/singers to form the stage lineup. Main members over the years have included singers Kim Sasabone and Denise Post-Van Rijswijk (also mentioned as Denise van Rijswijk), as well as vocalists Robin Pors, Roy Den Burger, Yorick Bakker, Donny Latupeirissa, Mark, Lilly and Travis McQueen. Kim Sasabone and Denise Post-Van Rijswijk were the lead singers.
The group achieved significant commercial success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with a characteristic eurodance sound, in the line of Dutch acts like 2 Unlimited. Among their most successful singles are Boom Boom Boom Boom and We're Going to Ibiza, which reached number one, as well as We Like to Party and Uncle John from Jamaica. Their third album, «Platinum Album», entered the top 10 and produced further hits such as Kiss and Shala Lala.
After nearly ten top‑10 hits, the group partially split around 2001–2002, with some members returning to work in the club scene. The group’s activity later resumed, notably in 2007.
